Himalayas of the soul: 108 upanishads, 10 principle ones (some say 13) xi. The two oldest (600 bc) and more important are: chandogya upanishad, bnhadarnyaka upanishad, both composed by sages (rishi) xiii. The central theme is brahman: man= self, sould ,spirit, mind, brah= universal, vase, infinite, means spirit behind everything in universe, god is impersonal, as opposed to western god which is like a person, truth, spirit behind everything xiv. Two beliefs about brahman+atman but there are 3 people: sankara- agrees with upanishads, advaita- nondualism, ramanuja- same but with some distinction, nondualism, maddhava- dualism xvi. Karma- every action has a consequence: may effect next life. xvii. Samsara- life as a continuous cycle of births and rebirths xviii. Moksha- the ultimate goal: liberation- when one realizes they are brahman xix.
