Jewish israeli and arab palestinian populations promote competing historical accounts of the struggle, with both sides claiming to be original inhabitants of the land and to have been victimized by the other. A major point of contention is the issue of israeli settlements. Archeological, historical and even biblical references seem to point to the fact that these lands were also part of the ancient land of israel. Furthermore, security issues would compel israel to maintain an active, permanent and substantial presence over such territories to guarantee its survival. Over the past several years, the un security council had called on iran to halt its uranium enrichment activities and imposed sanctions on iran in light of its refusal to stop its enrichment program.
