Document Summary

Section 6. 1: classical conditioning (ivan pavlov, terminology and procedures, unconditioned stimulus (us): a stimulus that evokes an unconditional response without previous change conditioning. Phobias are a good example of such responses. Before conditioning- the unconditioned stimulus (us) elicits the unconditioned response (ur), but the neutral stimulus (ns) does not. During conditioning- the neutral stimulus is paired with the unconditioned stimulus. After conditioning- the neutral stimulus alone elicits the response; the neutral stimulus is now a conditioned stimulus (cs), and the response to it is a conditioned response (cr). Stimulus generalization- occurs when an organism that has learned a response to a specific stimulus responds in the same way to new stimuli that are similar to the original stimulus. Stimulus discrimination- occurs when an organism that has learned a response to a specific stimulus does not respond in the same way to new stimuli that are similar to the original stimulus.
