Most abundant elements essential for all plants. A soil typically contains a higher percentage of aluminum than a rock. A rock typically contains a higher percentage of silicon than a soil. Reactivity is a function primarily of surface area. As the particle size in the soil decreases, surface area will increase. Combination of primary particles into secondary particles is aggregation. Soil aggregation is more related to the content of organic matter & clay. To determine: must have total volume & oven-dry mass. After a heavy tillage-growing season, bulk density is not affected. Heat stored in the fall is a primary function of moisture. Most important in fine textured soil: macro porosity. Most important in clayey textured soil: bulk density. 10yr 4/1 dominant wavelength of light reflected.
