Operationally defining variables allows for what: defining the procedures used to measure and/or manipulate the variables. Most variables can be operationally defined in many ways. With detailed instructions and definitions, researchers can replicate the procedure. Null hypothesis: first of three hypotheses we must test. How is it tested: suggests that the observed differences might be due to extraneous factors that affected the dependent measures. The researcher judges whether the design is strong enough to rule out the most likely confounding variables.
