Grow well in alkaline media (ph 8. 5-9) and bile salts. Enrichment media tcbs- thioculfate citrate bile salts sucrose agar. Symptoms include abdominal discomfort, rush of loose watery stools. Diarrhea odorless, mucous flecks, rice water stools , afebrile, no inflammation, no injury to bowel mucosa, vomiting may occur. If untreated, healthy person becomes hyposensitive (lbp) within 1 hour. Common disease progression: from 1st loose stool to shock in 4-12 hours, death within 18 hours to few days. Cholera treatment: replace fluids and electrolytes, early re-hydration, reduce mortality, death rate < 1%, oral or intravenous. Cholera treatment: dried packet formulas: glucose + nacl > physiological concentrations of k+ and bicarbonate.
