Freud argued we are driven by motives & conflicts,which we are unaware of, and that our personalities are shaped by early life experiences. Freud considered sex as most important of instincts. Development is a series of challenges, with the outcome of each stage depending on the child"s interactions with social partners. How each stage is resolved provides a strong or weak psychological foundation that the child brings to subsequent challenges. Development is life - long, but relies on the psychological foundation established early in life. Trust vs. mistrust (birth to 1 year) Autonomy vs. shame / doubt (1 - 3 years ) Industry vs. inferiority ( 7 - 11 years) Erikson believed children are active, curious people who seek to adapt to their environment. Erikson has less emphasis on sexual urges & more on cultural influences.
