By the mid 4th c. , increasing conflict ensued between christians and adherents of traditional religions, and in 380 (under theodosius i) christianity was declared the official, state religion. Soon restrictions were put on traditional sacrifices in temples; many temples were closed in the 390s. In the fifth and sixth centuries, christian opposition to traditional religions (called by them paganism ) escalated. In 608, the pantheon in rome was converted to a church, and probably also in the 7th c. the athenian parthenon was made into a church.
