ENGL110 Study Guide - Quiz Guide: Ha Jin
Document Summary
Saboteur by ha jin starts out with the main character, mr. chiu, having lunch with his bride at a train station. He mentions to his wife that he is afraid of his hepatitis flaring up. A policeman then throws tea in their direction and their shoes are wet. Mr. chiu begins to argue with the police and is unlawfully arrested. He is taken into custody for sabotage, but the police discriminate him for being part of the communist party. This short story contains several examples of situational irony where an event is contrary to what is expected. Throughout the story, the author illustrates irony when mr. chiu pretends guiltiness, takes care of his lawyer and when he becomes what he is accused of. Mr. chiu falsely claims responsibility for a crime he did not commit. He signs a contract which the police have prepared for him.
