The scientific study of how people"s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. About cognition (thoughts), affect (feelings), and behavior. Social refers to the actual, imagined and implied others. Put simply, it is the study of social influence. People underestimate the power of social influence (makes us feel better) Tendency to blame the victim (ex: join a cult) Sociology is the scientific study of a large group behavior of institutions in society (study phenomenon at the societal level) Similarities: both are interested in how people behave in groups. Differences: sociologists study groups; social psychologists study individuals in groups. Example: what predicts divorce: sociologists look at societal level predictors such as presence of no-fault divorce laws, social psychologists look at individual predictors such as conflict with in-laws. Personality psychology focuses on how individuals differ on certain stable traits (ex: introvert or extrovert)
