Document Summary

Coordination compounds (complexes): these species contain at least one complex ion that consists of a central metal cation bonded to molecules and/or anions called ligands, counter ions: maintains charge neutrality. Complex ion formation = lewis acid-base reaction: coordinate covalent bond: a bond that forms when the pair of electrons is donated by one atom, lewis base: electron donor. Has lone pair; anions are better lewis bases than neutral atoms or molecules. The more electronegative an atom, the less willing it is to be a base: lewis acid: electron acceptor. Electron deficient; many small, highly charged metal cations can accept electrons. Writing formulas: cation is written before anion, the charge of the cation(s) is balanced by the charge of the anion(s), neutral ligands are written before anionic ligands, and the formula for the whole ion is placed in brackets. If the complex ion is an anion, we drop the ending of the metal name and add ate.
