There is a specialized biochemical pathway that makes the neurotransmitter (ex chat), and the neurotransmitter is not used for any other purpose. But many neurotransmitters are unmodified molecules used in other contexts. Used in cell body to make proteins. Most of nerve terminal glutamate is made locally from glutamine , by enzyme.
