13th amendment: established in 1865, abolished slavery, and declared it unconstitutional. Freedman"s bureau: 1865, government agency focused on assisting in the relocation of freed slaves. It helped to ease transition from slavery to freedom, reunited families, placed marriages on legal footing, and established schools for former slaves. Black codes: 1866, local statues that gave blacks a narrow definition of freedom in the south that were used to restore white control over the lives of freed blacks. Homestead act: 1862, published by the government, used to give land to freed slaves and others. Consisted of planters, merchants, and democratic politicians who launched a reign of terror on republican leaders and african americans. This consisted of a loose coalition of southern unionist, free people, northern transports, and others who were against black codes. They made a huge impact on congress (ex: 14th amendment: all persons born/naturalized in the us are citizens of the us and of the state wherein they reside.
