Review session: sun dec 13 7-9 pm van allen lr1. Diane"s finals week of ce hours: mon 1-3, tues 1-2:30. Dave"s finals week of ce hours mon 10-12 am. De nition of right: hobbes and locke v different, mill says he"s not going to appeal to any abstract notion of rights. Like many utilitarians, he"s very suspicious about the claim of a right. Hobbes says its in your best interests to satisfy your desire you will need to have safe you"re constantly worried about people attacking you. Locke - one of the reason he says to enter civil society is for our rights people to do such. They all agree that society should have safety and happiness but they all disagree with the necessity of how to get there. Hobbes disagrees with discussion so that we don"t use our higher faculties. just follow the sovereign"s saying to do what you want.
