Document Summary

Chromosomes: structures in which an organism"s dna (cid:894)(cid:449)ith genes(cid:895) is organized, ser(cid:448)e as vehicles for transmitting genetic info. Chromatid: one of the longitudinal subunits of a replicated chromosome. Centromere: region where sister chromatids are attached after replication; site where spindle fibers attach. Sister chromatids: two identical copies of a single replicated chromosome that are connected by a centromere. Nonsister chromatids: not identical chromosome strands, one strand is inherited from maternal parent while the other one is inherited from paternal parent. Homologous pair: chromosomes identical with respect to their genetic loci and centromere placement. Nonhomologous pair: chromosome pairs in diploid cells that are morphologically and genetic distinct. C value: the haploid amount of dna present in a genome. Dna content: macromolecule consisting of nucleotide polymers comprsing antiparallel chains in which the sugar residues are deoxyribose (5 carbon sugar) and which are held together by hydrogen bonds.
