Document Summary

A three-layered-embryo allows for more complex body structures. The layers of the three-layered embryo are ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. The different kinds of symmetries in animals are radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry. Animals with radial symmetry repeat body sections around a central point. Animals with bilateral symmetry have essentially identical left and right sides. A complete digestive tract have a separate entrance and exit making a tube within a tube body plane which rapidly increased the level of complexity. The cambrian explosion was the major change in animal diversity that started approximately 550mya. It led to almost all of the unique lineages we see today and was strongly influenced by the increase in prey/predator relationships. Rapid diversification allowed prey animals to better survive predator attacks while predators changed quickly to try to overcome these new defenses. Arthropods are a unique group comprised of many different lineages.
