Document Summary

A diversification event that rapidly increased diversification among animals. Arthropods are successful because of their exoskeleton, segmented body appendages, specialized sense organs, and different stages of life which have different body plans and prevent competition. Insects are the most successful and numerous arthropods. The difference between cartilaginous (cartilage) and bony (bone) fishes is what their support structure is made of. Ray-finned (cartilage) and lobe-finned (bone) are the two types of bony fished. A cynodont is a reptile-like animal that mammals are descendants from. The production of milk through mammary glands is the primary characteristic of mammals. Eggs (monotremes) internally but moved to a pouch before development is finished (marsupials) and completely internal like humans (placentals. ) Primates is the group of animals humans belong to. Great apes and humans are included in the group hominidae. The vertebral column, hips, and the spinal cords connection to the skull allowed for more effective bipedalism.
