There is an importance in citizenship in archaic greece. Synoecism- coming together of a variety of villages and surrounding areas and defining a central city to be the governing body. Chora - the surrounding area of the polis. One of the most famous polis is athens and the surrounding area is attica. Elite land owning families that had control of the polis and made the decisions. Aristocracy - rule by the best, the elite, they own more land and have a bigger stake in the polis. Boule, gerousia - counsel of old elite men - consulting. Some offices were in place to maintain gov duties. A lot of the polis are large athens, sparta, thebes. But there are some small polis 2 or 3 villages.
