Norman triplett found that bicycle racers got faster speeds when racing against others vs. when they were racing a clock. Robert zajonc called it social facilitation and realized it applies to fish, birds, insects, etc. Zajonc randomly assigned cockroaches to two conditions: one in which they ran a maze alone and another where they ran a maze while being observed by an audience. Be able to give / recognize examples of each. Internal/dispositional- influenced by something from within, behavior stems from within, these factors exist within one"s control. At the grocery store the cashier isn"t so friendly so you decide that he must be an awful person all the time. External/situational- behavior is influenced by external factors, factors exist outside of one"s control. Our tendency to overestimate the impact that internal influences have on one"s behavior.
