Physical weathering takes place when solid rock becomes fragmented by physical processes that do not change its chemical composition. Joints in a rock are regularly spaced fractures that were formed at the time a magma cooled, crystallized, and contracted. All types of rocks might have joints in them- cracks along where there has been no movement. A fault is a crack along which movement of rock on either side has occured. Talus is the rocky accumulation that forms at the base of a cliff over long periods of time. Tree roots invade fractures in rock and widen cracks further. Chemical weathering is the chemical reaction of the minerals in rocks with air (that contains carbon dioxide) and water.
