Document Summary

The (cid:862)(cid:373)i(cid:374)i(cid:373)al group paradig(cid:373)(cid:863): people are explicitly randomly assigned to groups, not matter how random the division seems to be it automatically invokes negativity and competitiveness. Illusory correlation: people are not that good at assessing actual co-variation in the world and are generally biased in their assessments. People can"t actually tell what the correlation is between a minority group and negative behaviour. Despite there being no relationship between the group membership and the behaviour a majority of participants estimated that the minority group members performed more behaviours = salience of minority group affecting cognition. Implication: group associations, and therefore stereotypes, are constantly in flux. The group associations are not stable, relationships can shift, so prejudice behaviour is in flux. So could affect prejudice behaviour by shifting group membership: this doesn"t propose that prejudice goes away, the prejudice just shifts to someone else. Stereotype activation: stereotypes are an attitude to a group of people.
