In so doing, we develop a sense of what to expect, and how to predict when certain events occur. People therefore look for meaning, even where there is none. For example, whitson & galinsky (2008) noted that individuals are motivated to perceive patterns in random pictures (below) a phenomenon known as illusory pattern perception. The desire to combat uncertainty and achieve a sense of meaning and understanding may lead individuals to also see correlations where they do not exist.
