Document Summary

Psychodynamic theories: sigmund freud developed the first comprehensive theory of personality. In the 1880s before the advent of psychiatry and clinical psychology, freud encountered patients with a wide range of psychological disturbances. Charcot, a french neurologist, demonstrated that hysterical symptoms could be produced and alleviated, at least temporarily through hypnosis. Paralysed patients could walk again under the influence of a hypnotic suggestion, but the symptoms usually returned before long. This basic assumption was the centrepiece of freud"s theory of psychodynamic, psychological dynamics analogous to dynamics among physical forces: according to freud, psychological forces such as wishes, fears and intentions have a direction and an intensity. Freud"s models: the topographic model, used a spatial metaphor (the mind as split into sectors) that divided mental processes into three types, conscious mental processes. Are rational, goal-directed thoughts at the centre of awareness. Thoughts a person is currently aware of; secondary process thinking (logical, mature, time-oriented); can delay gratification: preconscious mental processes.
