Document Summary

Chapter 10 nucleic acid structure and dna replication. The genetic material functions as a dynamic blueprint for the construction of living organisms. It allows organisms to survive in their environments. To fulfill its role, it must meet the following criteria: Information: contain infromation in order to construct an entire organism. Transmission: the information must be passed from parent to daughter. Replication: the material must be accurately copieed. The identificaton of the genetic material began in the late 1800s. Scientists were convinced that chromosomes were the hereditary material, because it contains the genetic information. In 1920s to 1940s, scientists expected that protein would be identified as the genetic material. In late 1920s frederick griffith was studying two strains of a baterium called streptococcus pneumoniae (s. pneumoniae). Griffith was studying two strains of baterium: smooth (pathogenic) and rough (not pathogenic). Smooth (s): are usually fatl in mice and are pathogenic. Rough (r): unable to cause infection in mice.
