CHYS 2P10 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Executive Functions, Dynamical System, Cognitive Development
Document Summary
Theories provide a framework for understanding important phenomena, raise major issues regarding human nature and motivate new research. 4 major theories of cognitive development are piagetian, information- processing, socio-cultural, and dynamic systems. Conveys the flavor of children"s thinking at different ages, extends across a broad range of ages and content areas and provides many fascinating and surprising observations of children"s thinking. Piaget"s theory is often labeled constructivist depicts children as actively constructing knowledge on their own for themselves. His theory divides cognitive development into 4 stages: sensorimotor (birth to age 2), pre-operational stage (ages 2 to 7), concrete operational stage (age. 7 to 12), and the formal operational stage (age 12 and beyond) Sensorimotor stage- infants intelligence is expressed through motor interactions with the environment. Pre-operational stage- children become able to represent their experiences in language, mental imagery, and thought. Concrete operational stage- children become able to reason logically about concrete objects and events.
