Jane yolens wilding depicts the struggles teenagers find with individuality and peer pressure. Its interesting to see the representation of the future as a world where people are still dealing with peer pressure and the lack of unique identities. Zen does not like the way she looks with green powder on, yet she wears it because everyone else is. We see zen constantly try and be coolish and this suggests the difficulties she faces as she attempts to conform and how difficult it is to never deviate from social expectations. Zen has her own identity yet it is not socially acceptable for her to embrace it because she fears being judged. She believes that being coolish is the smart path and we see how this path leads her to danger as she is attacked and almost killed when she is wilding. Her attempts at trying to be coolish turn her into an arrogant person.
