Harlyn"s fairy is a fascinating children"s short story about a young girls" encounter with a fairy. I found this reading interesting because it was not based on a classic that would cloud the way i would read and interpret it. Though we are never informed of anything at the beginning regarding harlyn"s past, we still learn small pieces of her history throughout the short story that suggest why she behaves the way she does. Harlyn is a charming, intelligent character that understands the art and technique of conversing properly and effectively. She also knows how much a person needs to hear and when she has gone too far with sharing information. We see the way her mother"s institutionalization has had an effect on her language and behaviour. This discomfort may suggest that aunt marylyn fears that harlyn may perhaps face the same breakdowns her mother has.
