ENGL 2P82 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Egeus, Hermia
Document Summary
Lysander"s use of would instead of will in act 4 scene 1 of shakespeare"s a midsummer night"s. Dream illustrates how different his behaviour is in this scene in comparison to the first scene he is seen in. Using would instead of will shows that he is unsure and it is possible that he is speaking in such a way because he is nervous having just been caught running away with hermia by egeus and theseus. It may be caused by the guilt he feels for having done something he knows is illegal and could have himself and hermia executed. This could be interpreted as him being frazzled at the fact that he is all of a sudden caught and confronted by the people who he was in conflict with at the beginning of the play.
