There is an inversion that"s taking place, instead of his own town its pompeii, instead of the present it becomes in the past. Why is this inversion necessary: he has repressed her existence in the present so he dreams of her present in her past. He has been ignoring her in real life. One inverts the element of the manifest dream content to get the latent dream thought translating backwards. We usually suspend our disbelief with dreams because its fiction. Page 65 dream 2 this dream is nonsense and the narrative says this. It gives the readers a challenge to make sense out of it.
