Drugs are any chemical other than food intended to affect the structure or function of the body. The use of drugs for both medical and social purposes is widespread in canada. Drug use can, and often does, pose serious or even life-threatening risks. The most serious risks are abuse and addiction. The drugs most often associated with abuse are psychoactive drugs, those that alter a perso(cid:374)"s e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)(cid:272)es or (cid:272)o(cid:374)s(cid:272)ious(cid:374)ess; (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:272)ause intoxication, a state in which unpredictable physical and emotional changes occur. Historically, addiction was only recognized in relationship of drugs. Now, it is recognized that behaviours can be addictive: addictive behaviour. Addictive behaviours are habits that become out of control, with resulting negative effects on a perso(cid:374)"s health. A chronic disease that disrupts brain systems that regulate motivation, reward, and memory. Loss of (cid:272)o(cid:374)trol o(cid:448)er o(cid:374)e"s (cid:271)eha(cid:448)iour; a(cid:374) e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)(cid:272)e of (cid:449)ithdra(cid:449)al if the behaviour/subastance is removed; and a repeating cycle of recovery/relapse.
