Models of health behaviours and health care utilization. Analyzes ppls health beliefs to determine the actions that they take to preserve health. Major criticism: assumption that ppls behaviours are rational and reflective of their beliefs (e. g. , ppl who smoke know there are risks associated) Analyzes ppls health beliefs through the triadic relationship among cognitive and personal characteristics, behaviour and the environment. Connects behaviours with social and environmental factors impacting the behaviours of individuals. Health behaviours do not exist in a social vacuum but are learned and influenced through social interactions and environmental factors. Behaviours can be influenced by environmental factors and personal beliefs. The beliefs ppl hold about healthy living are not always how they live because of barriers. Behaviours linked to poor health and high morality 20 yrs later: excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, hrs of sleep, physical inactivity, eating between meals, not eating breakfast.
