Identification of speech segments is a multilayered process. Sensation is the first stage, in which the ear detects sound. Identification is the last stage in which we attribute meaning and significance to the message. Sound properties above speech segments; variations in speaking such as stress, intonation, pause etc. Stress and pause show separation in continuous speech. Pitch is determined by how frequently speaker"s vocal chords vibrate, the faster they vibrate the higher the pitch. Intonation refers to the change in pitch over time and can indicate the type of speech (statement, question etc). In a question intonation rises at the end, in other sentences it falls. Stress refers to the length, loudness or pitch of a syllable and can help determine the meaning of a word (ex contract vs contract)
