The most basic and universal human impulse may be the struggle for understanding. Existential anxiety: never certain of our place in life. (clinging to certainty) Epistemology: (seeking answers: empiricism science, rationalism philosophy, spiritualism religion. Ontology knowable: constructed, revealed through epistemology. Science study of the empirically accessible (something you can absorb/measure) Metaphysics cannot be studied empirically (souls outside the physical real, no smell, texture, weight) Most people live in the modern world, but there are many other world views. Pre-modernism: in pre-modern times it was believed that ultimate truth could be known and the way to this knowledge is through direct revelation. This direct revelation was generally assumed to come from god or a god. Modernism: desperate to establish that their world view is the only one. (isis) Postmodernism: has a world view, knows there are more, and worry they might have the wrong view. The nomothetic perspective: the perspective which seeks after what we all have in common.
