Chapter 2: methodology: how social psychologist do research. Social psychology: an empirical science: fundamental human behaviour can be studies scienti cally, hindsight bias the tendency for people to know it all well after the event occurred, formulating hypotheses & theories. Social psychologist start with a theory then they come up with a hypotheses. Theory a set of ideas that are intended to explain a phenomenon. Hypotheses a statement that predicts the outcome/relationship of two variables: hypotheses based on personal observation. Hypotheses can come from observation of human behaviour in everyday life. After the hypotheses researches collect data to test it. Operational de nition developing a de nition for a scienti c concept. Research designs: three research designs use by social psychologist, observation method. Research method where researches observe human behaviour and record their ndings. Ethnography a form of observational data, whereby researches attempt to understand a group/culture by observing it from the inside, without imposing their own bias.
