Document Summary
Campus recreation chapter 7 notes- november 3, 2016. Early on, goals were likely pure enjoyment, opportunities to socialize with friends, and relief from the boredom of work, study, or everyday life. The interest in pursuing physical and recreational activities and sport was naturally present on college campuses. The campus was the ideal setting for campus recreation as it was close to everything. Colleges and universities embraced the notion that programming for leisure and recreational pursuits, along with competitive athletics, was an important component in the overall education and well-being of their students. 1904 at cornell was the first time recreational/intramural sport had been introduced and from there it took off. Emerged as a formal department on campus and recreational programming subsequently experienced extensive growth and popularity for several reasons. The notion that healthy individuals are active, involved, and accomplished in activities of both mind and body became another cornerstone supporting the need for open reaction and intramural programming on campus.
