Marriages begin with a promise to marry in the future, after a common exchange of rings. However, they may choose to end the engagement and not proceed with a marriage. It was previously possible to sue someone for this. Once the engagement was broken off, either party could invoke legal doctrines to determine what happens to the party. If acquiring it was a join effort, the property is shared. Once the cancellation of the engagement happens, the party who chose to cancel it has to return the ring to the other party. The same situation applies when a third party gives gifts in expectation of the future marriage. Changing your last name is not a legal requirement, and people choose to keep theirs or adopt their spouses. However, once you have children, there are limitations on this. Marriage is a status on individuals put forth by the government. It is a voluntary union between only two people.
