Various customs are associated with engagement and marriage. These customs vary in different cultures and various historical perioids. They are associated with love and romance, the couples fertility, the households prosperity, and the subordinate position of women. Carrying the brde over the threshold is not simply a romantic gesture. It originally symbolized abduction of a daughter who would not willingly leave her fathers house. The bride was certainly not going to go peacefully into the bridegrooms residence because it would make her appear cheap . Thus, she was dragged or carried across the threshold. Arranged and forced marriages are part of life in australia. Matten olumee says he"s the best person to choose his sons future wives. Australian says it makes perfect sense: he"s guided his sons through their lives and he"d be the better judge of character of their prospective spouses. Matten is just one of the many australians keeping the arranged marriage tradition alive.
