Chapter 2 - the research enterprise in psychology. October 2013 - 82-year-old, alice munroe won the 2013 nobel prize in literature. First resident canadian, 13th woman anywhere to win this honour. Qualitative: used to find the meaning of a specific experience. Qualitative researchers, rather than working with variables defined in advance, they often tend to let the meanings assigned to the experience emerge from the data they collect. The data often consists of words and narratives of experiences. Quantitative: primarily examines cause-and-effect relationships where variable may be defined ahead of time. Goals of the scientific enterprise: measurement & description - sciences"s commitment to observation requires an investigator figure out a way to measure whats being studied. To evaluate their understanding, they make and test predictions (hypothesis): application & control - scientists hope the information they gather will be of some practical value in helping to solve everyday problems.
