3 types of offences in canada: summary offences: sentence < 6 months or 18 months in some cases and fine < 2000$. No right to trial by jury. indictable offences: less serious offences by judge alone (theft, obtaining money/property br false pretences, failure to comply with probation officer, highly serious offences must be tried by judge and jury. Treason, murder, piracy: for some offences accused may choose to be tried by judge or jury. Juries act: provincial/territorial legislation how jurors may be selected, differences between provinces may be minimum age (18 ontario, 19 bc) and professions (lawyers, cops): jury summons: court order thats states time and place for jury duty. Can get fined or get time for not showing up: criminal trials in canada have 12 jurors, challenges, peremptory challenge: crown or defence use these to reject jurors who they beliee will not rule in their favour.
