Purpose of this chapter: horizontal relationships across organization - organizations can choose to build relationships in many ways, such as appointing preferred suppliers, establishing agreements, business partnering, joint ventures, or even merges and acquisitions. Organizations now need to coevolve with others in the ecosystem so that everyone gets stronger - with coevolution, the whole system becomes stronger - companies coevolve through discussion with each other, shared visions, alliances, and managing complex relationships. Organizational ecosystems, con ict and cooperation frequently exist at the same time - companies today may use their strength to win con icts and negotiations, but ultimately cooperation carries the day. Relationships among organizations can be characterized by where the organizations are dissimilar or similar and whether relationships are competitive or cooperative - by understanding these perspectives, managers can assess heir environment and adopt strategies to suit their needs. Resource-dependency theory describes rational ways organizations deal with each other to reduce dependence on the environment.
