Samuel halevi became known as samuel hanagid he became the chief minister at the court of granada and became the political head of jews in granada (spain). He served as a rabbi for his community and did a great deal to further jewish learning throughout the world. The following account of his life is taken from sefer seder ha-ka(cid:271)(cid:271)alah (cid:894)(cid:862)the li(cid:374)e of t(cid:396)aditio(cid:374)(cid:863)(cid:895) a hebrew historical work written by abraham ibn daud of toledo in 1161: Rabbi samuel halevi was a talmudic scholar who was also well versed in arabic literature and language. He was a merchant supporting himself until the fall of the amirid kingdom when the. It was at this time that the land of cordova declined and inhabitants started fleeing. There he had a shop and was a petty merchant near the palace of ibn alarif. This was the vizier of king habbus, son of maksan, the king of berbers in granada.
