Negotiate a compromise among competing definitions compromise to continue the interaction. Difficult to negotiate a widely shared definition of a situation. Symbolic interactionists individuals construct definitions of situations as they try to organize interactions and events in a way that makes sense. Difficulty to arrive at a shared agreement about what has happened or what is happening in a situation.
