Functions of the kidneys: regulation of ecf volume & blood pressure, regulation of osmolarity, maintenance of ion balance, homeostatic regulation of ph, excretion of wastes, production of hormones. The nephron: the functional unit of the kidney modifies fluid volume & osmolarity, kidney has 2 layers formed by the nephrons, an outer cortex & inner medulla, 80% of nephrons are within the cortex, consists of a specialized tubular structure & closely associated blood vessels, one nephron has 2 arterioles and 2 sets of capillaries.
