PSYO 2220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Anorexia Nervosa, Junk Food, Nicotine
Document Summary
Bulimia nervosa: our-of- control eating episodes; also known as binges. This is usually followed by attempts to purge (get rid of) the food. Anorexia nervosa: person eats only minimal amounts of food, or would engage other behaviors to reduce weight. (can be fatal): anorexia nervosa may be one of the most fatal disorders discussed in this course. 20% of people with the disorder die: suicide attempts are very common with this disorder. Eating disorders were not recognized as psychological disorders until recently (1895). It(cid:495)s evident that eating disorders are cultural, especially in countries where all necessary food supplies are easy to find. Eating disorders seem to be prominent on females. Eating-out-of control is a criterion for binges to be considered a disorder. Another criterion for this disorder are the purging techniques that a person would engage to (cid:494)compensate(cid:495) for the high food intake: such techniques are: vomiting induction, laxatives or diuretics intake, fasting, etc .
