The sabine men watched the races and romulus" men carried off the sabine women. In the 3rd century there were 8 race tracks in rome. Even in the fall of rome in the 5th century it remained a popular sport in the eastern empire. Chariot racing was similar to modern pro football. It was designed to make a profit for organizers by employing professionals. There were 4 chariot racing companies in ancient rome - red, white, blue, green. Each was called a faction, each faction was owned by businessmen.
