According to roman legend, the first public entertainment was chariot racing which was planned by romulus shorty after he founded rome. There was no women in the city so he invited the sabines to watch horse races in the valley. This was where the circus maximus was built later. The sabine men watched the races and romulus" men carried off the sabine women. In the 3rd century there were 8 race tracks in rome. Even in the fall of rome in the 5th century it remained a popular sport in the eastern empire. Chariot racing was similar to modern pro football. It was designed to make a profit for organizers by employing professionals. There were 4 chariot racing companies in ancient rome - red, white, blue, green. Each was called a faction, each faction was owned by businessmen.
