Howev, no one was enforcing this and war soon broke out. Forced relocation, massacres of arabs took place. Eventually, war escalated until reorganized israeli army won, enlarging state. No palestinian state--egypt and jordan controlled areas. War was v costly, but is important part of natl myth. Small group devoted to hebrew renaissance and casting off old depictions of the downtrodden, weak jew. Fascists who rejected judaism for hebrew universalism. New jewish state was still weak, needed more ppl. Law of return helped bring in huge amts of holocaust survivors. Arab nationalism pushed jews out of north african state--these jews were looked down upon in israel, forced to live in shanty towns. Econ gap btwn mena jews and ashkenazim only widened w german reparations. Absorption of immigrants was huge, expensive undertaking.
