The us had a huge social and economic change between the end of reconstruction and beginning of wwi. The city of chicago grew from a population from 298,977 in. There was also a huge increase in industrialization and immigration as well as technological advances. This took the place as making steel and the construction of large factories for mass production. Factories no longer needed many skilled people because everything could be done by machine now, they just needed people in factories to operate the machines. Industrial workers worked in dangerous conditions and had little leverage to negotiate fare wages and workplace safety. Employers expected their workers to work 12 - 14 hours a day and 6 days a week.
