For du bois, wwi offered lessons about the state of race relations around the world. He saw the problem with the marginialisation of. Radial prejudice prevented african americans from using military service to get rid of jim crow laws in their own country. But the war gave them hope that a democratic and equal society can exist. Working men could not see through the western propaganda that claimed black people only existed to serve as beats of burden for white folk. African americans did not have the power to bargain and they risked setting back the fight against racial prejudice if they chose not to fight. The including of african americans into the draft represented the important recognition of citizen status. The naacp was important in breaking down stereotypes about the capacity of black men to lead. In the war black divisions under american supervision did not perform well, but one division under french supervision performed very well.
