HIST 382 Chapter reading: Reading Fated to Perish
Document Summary
During the 18th century hunter gathers found themselves struggling for survival. The dutch settlement expanded into the communities who had made their lives in south africa. Thousands of hunter gatherers had been killed and many were incorporated into the colonial economy as captive labourers. Large areas of land were taken from them by the trekboers who spearheaded the advance of the colonial frontier. Since the 1770s the frontier ceased to advance and in some regions it had actually receded. The trekboers had been stopped by the xhosa. Without the resistance of the hunter-gatherers fighting to preserve their identity, the white settlement would have been way more extensive. The new british government was horrified to discover the state of violence which characterised the group relations within the colony"s frontier zone. Bushmen were victims of continuous commando attacks by frontier farmers whose aim it was to slaughter the men and make captives of the women and children.
