The records of the british side are much richer and more extensive, and in english. Boers lived on farms, afrikaners lived in cities and were mainly educated at the victoria college in the cape. The imperial army waged wars of colonial conquest in africa. Firing homes, looting stock and destroying crops was the standard way of suppressing resistance. Homesteads were a target from the first day, the imperial army invaded the orange free state. First the farmhouse and african quarters were gutted. The gentlemen"s war lasted until at least the mid-1900s. Roberts urged burghers to surrender with lenient measures, "kid glove policy" assured property and people would be safe if they swore an oath of neutrality and laid down their arms. It took lots of supplies to keep a hundred men on active service. In april roberts ordered the invasion to take horses and transport animals on starvation rations. Soldiers marched over crops, hacked down fences and lit fires.
